Hailing from Boise, Idaho, 57-year-old Pat Fulghum was eager to bring his passion for mountain biking to FulGaz. His collection features some of his favourite rides from his 2021 summer spent travelling western USA.
Tell us about this ride collection and why you chose these routes?
Since Pat retired in 2020, he and his wife, Tammee, spend the warm months travelling and seeing the sights of the western USA. From the spectacular sandstone area of southern Utah (Zion National Park Rides) in the spring to Idaho mountains and Oregon coast to cool off in the hot summer. This ride collection is from those travels in 2021.
What’s your favourite ride to do in the real world?
There are so many great rides close by, but my wife and I have taken the pilgrimage to Glacier National Park for the last two years to ride “Going to the Sun” road. In 2021 we spent 10 days there in mid-June. The road was not open to cars yet but was open to bikes in the late afternoon after the road clearing crews had left for the day. Glacier is a spectacular place to see and hike. It is amazing to see the wildlife (Moutain Goats, Bears, Big Horn Sheep), the stars from the top of Logan Pass, the waterfalls from melting snow, and how fast the flowers come and go. Every couple of weeks the park changes so much.
Favourite FulGaz ride & why?
“Going to the Sun Road” is a spectacular recording and probably my one favourite if I had to choose just one. But there is literally so many great rides on FulGaz to choose from with such diversity in terrain and scenery. It is a great way to see the world on a budget.
Favourite cycling memory?
While attending school in Golden Colorado in the early 1980s is where I came to love cycling. I have literally ridden Lookout Mountain well over 100 times in real life in the 1980s, and seeing that ride on FulGaz brought back some great memories of that time in my life.
Dream bike or favourite bike?
My favourite bike is my next bike.
Any other random facts you’d like to add?
From the day I retired just before the Covid-19 lockdown to the Spring of 2021, I lost 50lbs of weight by cycling. I set two goals for 2021. I wanted to ride a century (100 miles) and I wanted to climb (100 miles) of vertical. The century was completed in mid-summer, but it took to mid-December to reach my climbing goal. My goal for 2022 is to ride a 5-hour solo century.
