Stage 1 of the Around the World in 80 Days challenge is arguably one of our most interesting. The ride starts across the street from the construction of the new Amazon HQ, goes past the Pentagon then over the Potomac River to the Jefferson Memorial. From there it goes to Hains Point, one of the most popular exercise venues in the US. A 3.2 mile loop resplendent with cherry blossom. Onto the Mall and up to the US Capitol, finishing up on the Washington Monument with a glimpse of the White House.

We will head north crossing several road bridges and marvel at the incredible backdrop of towering mountains rising from the sea passing by the beautiful little fishing villages of Moskenes, the spectacular Reine, onto the tiny island of Hamnøy and finish in Sund.

At Lofthouse at 10Km we continue straight on, ignoring the turn onto Côte de Lofthouse, then bear right onto a private road leading up to the reservoirs. The jagged peak in front of you at the finish is Great Whernside; over the brow is Wharfedale and Kettlewell and the infamous Park Rash (OC-45).

To get there the ride starts at the pretty town of Vogüé before heading over unspoilt rolling hills, through the quiet roads and eventually reaching the spectacular Gorges de l’Ardèche.

Start in Bad Hindelang, Germany and follow the road onto the well-known Oberjoch Pass. It’s not too long with mostly moderate grades. Shortly after Schattwald in Austria, we deviate onto smaller bike-paths and cycle through the Tannheimer Tal towards Grän where the ride finishes with a last view into the mountains.

Our ride starts in the centre of Torrenieri and continues by 5% tarmac climb to Podere Poggio al Sorbo.
Here we start the L´Eroica gravel route in beautiful landscapes to the historical village Lucignano d´Asso. Then downhill to the wide tarmac road for a moment and back to the gravel on known Pieve a Salti. This route was part of the spring classic Strade Bianche and also featured in famous automobile Rallye San Remo in the 80s.

An early evening ride along the famous Nad Al Sheba cycling track in Dubai towards Jumeirah Beach. Enjoy the cityscape views with glimpses of the world’s tallest skyscraper the Burj Khalifa, and finish beachside with the distinctive Burj Al Arab hotel in the distance.
It’s a furious descent into Sandy Bay as thoughts turn to post-ride coffee, finishing the ride with a view across the harbour.

Bruny is an island gem off the coast of Tasmania. Starting on the coastal road at sunrise we roll past Hotel Bruny (try the oysters and local cider) then climb inland before taking a left at the famous Bruny Bread Fridge, onto some pristine Tassie gravel. Hitting the end of the road it’s a quick U-turn, back through town and up Alonnah Climb (1.2km at 5% average). Another U-turn outside Bruny Island Premium Wines (try the Pinot Noir) before descending back into Alonnah, finishing with glorious views across the water.

This short ride through the town of Kincardine takes us along Boiler Beach road, named for wreckage from a boiler partially buried in the sand from the steamship “Erie Belle” that exploded in 1883. We’ll pass the historic lighthouse a few times, and pass some of the town’s main street with largely intact historical buildings typical of the late 19th and early 20th century in Ontario.
