Ride Antarctica with Dr Kate Leeming

In a very special FulGaz experience, you can now explore Antarctica by bike!

Captured earlier this year by bike explorer Dr Kate Leeming, this is a truly remarkable ride as you’ll explore the great white expanse around Wolf’s Fang Camp.

As these were filmed from a fat bike in slow, challenging conditions, we’ve locked these in steady mode, making this ideal for a structured session or for those looking to see what life is like at the South Pole.

You can find these rides under NEW in FulGaz or by searching “Leeming”.

WOLF'S FANG CAMP TO ECHO CAMP AND RETURN

NOTE: This ride is locked in Steady mode. This ride goes from Wolf’s Fang camp, up a long, gentle slope to the futuristic pods of the brand new Echo camp and return, a journey of about 10km. The groomed track crosses the ice fields, tracking alongside the blue ice runway near to Wolf’s Fang.

CROSSING SASTRUGI

NOTE: This ride is locked in Steady mode. Sastrugi are ice formations carved by the prevailing wind, in this case the constant katabatic winds that “fall” off the high Antarctic plateau. For about 40km of my journey my route was perpendicular to the sastrugi and the prevailing winds, making for a very rough ride. I had to constantly weave my way through the field to find a smoother path. This ride is a shorter section over some of the smoother ice and snow.

PUSHING OVER SOFT PLAINS

NOTE: This ride is locked in Steady mode. Setting off on the final day with 54km to go, I had ideal conditions - brilliant sunshine, -17C and a light crosswind. The snow was pretty soft, making it heavy going, but all rideable. My tyres break through the snowy crust on the surface acting like a continuous brake, adding to the resistance. It feels like I am doing a never-ending interval training session!
