BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge
31 May @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
FulGaz is excited to be partnering with the BDO Lake Taupo Cycling Challenge to bring you a taste of their 2021 event.
A rolling and punchy route will give you the opportunity to enjoy one of New Zealand’s most picturesque regions to ride.
This course on FulGaz features the opening 41km of the famous 160km ‘Round the Lake’ – a one-lap circumnavigation of Lake Taupo.
This route will give you a taste of the real-life ride, and will feature a hosted Zoom, so you can ride with or against your friends and chat to a few cycling celebrities along the way including the Voice of Cycling, Phil Liggett. If you don’t have a Smart Trainer to do the ride, you can still join the Zoom as a spectator. Make sure you register below to access the Ride and Zoom.
See you at the start line!
New to FulGaz? Quick start guide
The great part about this event is that you don’t have to cycle, the choice is yours. However, joining us on FulGaz will create the most immersive experience possible. Here’s how to get started on FulGaz in five easy steps. READ ON.
1. Download FulGaz and set up a free account
We offer new subscribers a 14-day free trial, no credit card required.
Downloading the trial gives you Full Access to FulGaz with no restrictions on content, or how often or how far you ride. If you’re returning to FulGaz for another go, send us a support ticket and we’ll hook you up with another trial on the house.
2. Connect your devices
When you load up FulGaz and hit Get Started, you’ll be greeted with a pairing screen. Here your smart bike/trainer/speed sensor will be picked up and listed. Select the devices you’d like to connect and click Let’s Ride.
Pro Tip If you can’t see your devices when trying to connect, they are most likely paired with another app (RGT, Rouvy, Zwift). You will need to deselect your trainer from that app’s pairing screen, quit that app, and restart FulGaz.
3. Set your preferences, weight and slope scaling
Click the settings icon to take a moment to set your display preference (metric or imperial). For the most realistic experience, enter your weight and bike weight. There are many other settings here also; it’s best to get a feel for riding FulGaz first before adjusting these.
Pro Tip If you find the hills too hard, you can adjust the Slope Scaling, this is essentially the “trainer difficulty”. Adjusting this won’t make you faster, but it will make hills easier!
4. Download a video and ride
We always suggest downloading the video ahead of time. For any event, you must download the video. Before the event, test your setup with something from the Easy collection. These rides will give you a good “feel” for how FulGaz looks and interacts with your trainer or smart bike.
5. Get event-ready
Before you start your event, make sure you turn up at the start line ready. Here’s a quick checklist
- Download the ride ahead of time
- If joining us on Zoom, download the app and run it on a different device.
- Stay hydrated – have at least two bottles of water available
- Have a towel and fan to help you cool down.
- Test your set up using one of the other rides – the BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge route will open at 18.30NZT, while you can download it ahead of ride, you cannot ride it until 18.30pmNZT
What equipment do I need?
Or Basic Set-up
Connection equipment FulGaz works on Apple TV or an iPhone or iPad as well as Windows and Android devices. To get started you will need to download the app onto your respective device. For an amazing viewing (and riding) experience we highly recommend using an Apple TV connected to your lounge room TV or monitor. Please note rides in ‘event mode’ will force you to download the ride prior to starting. This ensures an uninterrupted riding experience so make sure you download each stage well ahead of time to avoid delays. FulGaz for MacOS is currently in the ‘Beta’ testing phase, visit the FulGaz website for more details and to download FulGaz.

About BDO Lake Taupō Cycle Challenge
We’re the BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, and we feel privileged to be tasked with delivering one of NZ’s biggest annual sport participation events. We are motivated by our passion for showcasing the beauty of Taupo and its roads and trails, celebrating the joy of riding, building a community of riders, putting smiles on people’s faces, and providing the best event experience we can.
Our mission is for BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge to be an event that offers something for everyone and inspires people to push their personal limits and challenge themselves. We want our event to stand out from other events and be known as a well-organised, fun, safe event that puts participants at the forefront of everything. We believe the Cycle Challenge caters to all – from the absolute beginner, the weekend warrior through to the elite athlete, as well as the dedicated supporter.
In its 43 year history, the Cycle Challenge has become an iconic event that has touched the hearts of generations. We are here to ensure that this event lives on and has a special place in the hearts and minds of Kiwis and Internationals alike for future generations.
The BDO Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is managed and delivered by a small team of proud locals who are honoured to be involved with this world-class event. This event has grown from grass roots to one of New Zealand’s most iconic sporting occasions. We are genuinely proud of what the event has become, and are committed to its future success.
We generate the largest economic impact of any event in the Taupo region. Owned by a Charitable Trust, and governed by a Rotary-appointed Board, all surpluses are injected back into the community, benefitting a number of worthy groups and organisations.
Our aim is that our valued event participants see the Cycle Challenge as being innovative, aspirational, inclusive, challenging yet achievable, and quite simply, the best event of its kind.
