Here’s a cracking selection from some of our more prolific US contributors Rick Norton, Alexis Berthillier, and Dan Phillips. We also welcome first-timer, Erick Echeverria.

Climbing Spruce Knob is a favourite around the FulGaz office this week, perfect for those long, sustained climbing efforts.

You can find these rides under NEW in FulGaz.

CARMEL VALLEY ONE

This rides starts strong with Las Laureles Grade a 1.7 mile climb with 8% average grade and 700ft in elevation, this will be the warm up of a long ride. After a quick downhill to Carmel Valley Village, we now ride on Carmel Valley Road, slowly climbing on this quiet remote road, but then it is time to turn right onto Cachagua, a grinding 1.9mile long climb at 8.5% average grade which will test your lungs but delivers amazing vistas of the surrounding valleys. After a quick downhill, we come back onto Carmel Valley road for the remaining of the climb.

CROZET GRAVEL SOUTH 2

An update of about 75-80 minutes of a Crozet south side Gravel loop. This one has perfect blue skies, very light traffic, and a few novelties to keep it interesting. A stuck truck near the top of a steep kicker on White Mountain and a water crossing across an open ford on Burches Creek. Crozet gravel is hilly but at gravel bike filming pace it’s a bit more restrained. These roads are enjoyed by some very strong local riders as two segments are held by local world tour Pros!

CLIMBING SPRUCE KNOB

Spruce Knob is the highest peak in West Virginia. "Knob" is a regional description for a mountain peak. It is a very remote area and hard to access. It is rarely climbed by cyclists. Perhaps you can see why I want this in our library! After some steeper initial ramps it is remarkably evenly graded and shallower allowing one to hold a little speed. It is also long, about 18.5 kilometres. I included two smaller climbs and one highway descent that is well enough engineered that you do not need to touch the brakes, even on the trainer! Hopefully this gives you a feel of just how far removed this rugged climb is.
