About Black Dog Institute

ABOUT

FulGaz is proud to be partnering with Black Dog Institute to bring you the Black Dog Institute Cycle60 Challenge on FulGaz.

A series of rides that challenges you to ride 60 minutes, every day in the month of June in an effort to help boost your mental health and raise much-needed funds for the 60% of people that don’t seek help for mental ill-health, supporting the important work of Black Dog Institute.

We’ve selected some of our most popular and picturesque routes on FulGaz to help you stay motivated across June, even when the mercury drops.

You can ride these routes in any order.

This is a free event, available to download in FulGaz. For all Australian riders, just by registering to raise funds, you’ll score a free water bottle.

ADK ROAD LOOP AROUND KEENE

Starting on a foot bridge across the Ausable River, we follow the river about 1 mile into the town of Keene. We quickly exit the town center to climb the steep 2 mile Hurricane road climb. The top of the climb is a fun twisting 4.5 mile road before a super fast 2 mile highway descent. Enjoy the next 5 miles of nearly flat roads mostly along the river. Turn across a one lane bridge over the river and climb for 1 mile (mostly on gravel) before a welcome descent back into town and along the river to the start. Enjoy the scenic ADK views despite some haze from the western wildfires.

ALASKAN CRUISIN'

The Alaskan capital Juneau can only be reached by air or sea, and this ride was filmed whilst the contributor’s cruise liner was docked in port. It starts at the ever-shrinking yet impressive Maidenhall Glacier and is a flat ride to the centre of Juneau taking in the State Capitol building and ending at the iconic Whale Sculpture.

The wonderful snow capped Alaskan mountains are always visible in the background.

BAYRISCHZELL TO KUFSTEIN

"Kennst du die Berge, die Berge Tirols, das Städtchen Kufstein, das kennst du wohl..." - a famous-notorious 70s local song inevitably comes to your mind when you are from Germany. From Bayrischzell, Bavaria, we cycle on the local road with the raising sun towards Austria. Watch the tourists preparing their hiking trips to the local mountains. Once we cross the border, the sun always accompanies us along smaller, undulating roads and along the very scenic "Thiersee" lake. We finally arrive in Kufstein, Tyrol.

BETTYHILL TO REAY

This is the last hilly section of the across Britain challenge before the relatively flat roads of Caithness.

The route takes us past Armadale and Strathy with some great views along the North Coast. This section of road is part of the North Coast 500 route around Scotland. The route ends where the Reay to John O'Groats ride starts, so you can ride them back-to-back and complete the final 50 miles of the LEJOG route.

CAPER HILL (OC-149) AND ROSEDALE CHIMNEY (OC-55)

This ride climbs two 10/10 hills in the North Yorkshire Moors.

Caper Hill (Official UK climb #149, length 1.2km, height gain 174m) and the more famous Rosedale Chimney (Official climb #55, length 1.4km, height gain 179m). Like all the best hills, both are visible in the far distance as you approach them just to intimidate you. The ride starts in Egton, passes through the scenic Glaisdale and climbs Caper Hill up onto the moors before descending into the village of Rosedale. The chimney has a feared reputation among cyclists as one of the steepest roads in the UK, so provides a challenging finish.

A stunningly beautiful ride starting at Château de Bourdeilles and passing beneath overhanging cliffs on the way to Brantôme, the Venice of the Périgord.

The ride continues past several Châteaux (look out for Château de Bruzac on the left just after St Pierre de Cole) and pretty villages before ending at the medieval village of St-Jean de Cole, decorated for the annual flower festival.

CROZET GRAVEL SOUTH

This area is very fortunate to have a healthy network of gravel roads you can connect to make a loop. The foothills gravel is characterized by lots of up and down (and a bit steeper than the paved variety). 3 Segments typify this: Burches, White Mountain, and Castle Rock. Luckily on the trainer you don’t have to brake for the dusty turns before heading up the next kicker! If you like this - try the 2 part Crozet Gravel North loop

About Black Dog Institute

1 in 5 of us will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year. In Australia that’s around 5 million people. And roughly 60% of these people won’t seek help.

As the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, Black Dog Institute’s aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone.

Black Dog does this through ‘translational’ research. Integrating our research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections, and create real-world change.

New to FulGaz?

1. Download FulGaz and set up a free account. To activate your extended trial, simply enter the promo code found in your registration email.

Downloading the trial gives you full access to FulGaz with no restrictions on content, or how often or how far you ride. If you’re returning to FulGaz for another go, send us a support ticket and we’ll hook you up with another trial on the house.

2. Connect your devices
When you load up FulGaz and hit Get Started, you’ll be greeted with a pairing screen. Here your smart bike/trainer/speed sensor will be picked up and listed. Select the devices you’d like to connect and click Let’s Ride.

Pro Tip If you can’t see your devices when trying to connect, they are most likely paired with another app (RGT, Rouvy, Zwift). You will need to deselect your trainer from that app’s pairing screen, quit that app, and restart FulGaz.

3. Set your preferences, weight and slope scaling
Click the settings icon to take a moment to set your display preference (metric or imperial). For the most realistic experience, enter your weight and bike weight. There are many other settings here also; it’s best to get a feel for riding FulGaz first before adjusting these. Start at around 60% uphill to get the feel. You can adjust this in ride also.

For the event itself, you won’t be able to adjust your bike weight. Only rider weight so please keep that in mind.

Pro Tip If you find the hills too hard, you can adjust the Slope Scaling, this is essentially the “trainer difficulty”. Adjusting this won’t make you faster, but it will make hills easier!

4. Download a video and ride
We always suggest downloading the video ahead of time. For any event you must download the video.  Before the event, test your setup with something from the Easy collection. These rides will give you a good “feel” for how FulGaz looks and interacts with your trainer or smart bike.

5. Get event-ready
Before you start your event, make sure you turn up at the start line ready.

Here’s a quick checklist

      • Download the ride ahead of time
      • Check your set up before you ride.
      • Stay hydrated – have at least two bottles of water available
      • Have a towel and fan to help you cool down.
What equipment do I need?

To participate in this event from the comfort of your own home you will need some cycling equipment.

PRO Set-Up

  • Road Bike
  • Smart Trainer (e.g Elite Suito, Wahoo Kickr) or a smart bike.

Or

Basic Set-up

  • Road Bike
  • Standard Trainer (Check out some options here)
  • Speed Sensor if using Standard trainer.

Connection equipment

FulGaz works on Apple TV, MacOS or an iPhone or iPad as well as Windows and Android devices. To get started you will need to download the app onto your respective device. For an amazing viewing (and riding) experience we highly recommend using an Apple TV connected to your lounge room TV or monitor.

Please note rides in ‘event mode’ will force you to download the ride prior to starting. This ensures an uninterrupted riding experience so make sure you download each stage well ahead of time to avoid delays.

What order do I have to ride these in?

You can ride these routes in any order, just make sure you finish by midnight 30 June in your local time zone.
