California + Washington with Mike Nelson

This week Mike Nelson’s collection transports you to California and Washington in the USA.

Point Loma is a highlight of this collection, featuring a variety of road surfaces, views and a few little hills to keep you on your toes. At one stage, off in the distance, you can even see Mexico.

You can find all of these under NEW in the FulGaz app.

FIESTA ISLAND

Starting in the Mission Beach area of San Diego this ride loops around Fiesta Island, then follows the San Diego River Bike Path all the way to the ocean and the Ocean Beach dog beach. On the way down the path notice the estuary of the San Diego River with the tide in. It's famous for birders, especially during the spring and fall migration seasons. You'll even get a taste of urban road construction and the consequent detour.

MERCER ISLAND CCW

This route crosses the Homer M. Hadley floating bridge using a bike/pedestrian path that was part of the original bridge construction and enables human-powered crossing of Lake Washington. At 1,772m in length, it's the fourth longest floating bridge in the world. After the bridge crossing, the route circumnavigates Mercer Island, a suburban community occupying the island. The east side of the island is a twisting set of turns from south to north. The ride finishes up by crossing through the village of Beaux Artes and south Bellevue (the second largest city in Washington State), then travels back across the north end of Mercer Island and the Homer Hadley bridge.

POINT LOMA

This ride has everything an urban ride should have: bike path, rough roads, smooth roads, hills, ocean, views. After winding through the Ocean Beach area of San Diego the ride begins to climb steadily up to the top of Point Loma and the old lighthouse. From the top you get views of downtown San Diego and the harbour. Then there's a quick dive back down to the ocean with views of surf and surfers with Tijuana, Mexico and Mexican islands off in the distance, a dead-end turnaround, and climb back up. Once atop the point it's mostly downhill back to Ocean Beach. At 18.1 Km, keep your eyes peeled for the fox that crosses the road twice, first left to right then right to left just before leaving the Navy area.
