Andres de la Guardia Oteiza

Andres de la Guardia Oteiza is FulGaz’s first contributor from Panama City in the Republic of Panama!

The 41-year old’s ride focuses on some interesting tropical riding along the quiet peaceful roads around the transcontinental country.

A stand-out ride that Andres has recorded is the Panama Canal Entrance, a stunning loop around one of the world’s most famous waterways that connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Tell us about your rides and why you chose these routes?

These are the routes I usually do. They are the most popular in Panama City for road and MTB cyclists and they’re easy rides to film. I’m just getting started. I plan to keep adding more challenging rides. I hope that one day somebody will randomly contact me to say: “I saw your ride in Fulgaz, I loved it and I went to Panama to do it in real-life.”

What’s your favourite ride to do in the real world?

Cruce del Lagarto, a 80Km MTB mixed trail from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. It’s held once a year around late April / early May.

Favourite FulGaz ride & why?

Alpe d’Huez 2020. It is an amazing workout, has the prestige of a top Tour de France climb and the 2020 version is very well filmed.

How did you start filming rides for FulGaz?

May 10, 2020 was the original date for the Cruce del Lagarto 2020. It got canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic. We were in lockdown and I was very sad. That day I rode on FulGaz to “compensate” for my most treasured ride of the year that had been canceled. While I was riding I thought: “Why isn’t the Cruce del Lagarto in FulGaz?” and I realized that the answer was: because somebody has to film it. That day I decided to contact FulGaz to become a contributor.

I love the way I’ve been able to visit so many places in the world through FulGaz

Favourite cycling memory?

When I started cycling for real with my mother in 1994. We borrowed a pair of old and clunky MTB’s and went riding in Taboga Island, also known as the “Island of Flowers”, is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Panama about 20km from Panama. The great thing is I still ride with her.
